Plenty of people will spend this Valentine’s Day thinking about their significant other. Many will go the extra mile to impress them as they buy cards, flowers, and perhaps go out to a romantic dinner. But, here’s a question you might not have thought to ask: Are you spending time romancing your customers or clients as well?

The most fatal mistake any business owner can make is believing that they are their customers’ only option. You don’t want to make your customers feel trapped in a relationship with you out of desperation. Instead, you should be investing in your customer relationships so that they can trust you, rely on you, and see you as their perfect match. If you do that, they won’t ever be swayed by a competitor trying to steal their love and loyalty.

That might all sound a little to romanticized, but if you think about it, all of this is true in everyday life. Are you just completing a job for your customers or are you building a lasting relationship with them? Knowing your customers’ fears, hopes, and your common ground is the key to unlocking client relationships that truly flourish. And, what better time to start than this Valentine’s Day?

Here are some tips to help your business stand out as you get into the romantic spirit of February.

1. Deep connections built on emotion

There is an emotional connection to be made with every customer of your business. Everyone who seeks out a product or service is doing it to address a problem or bring some new element into their life. That could be making a task easier, making a task more enjoyable, or something else. Whatever the case may be, you need to figure out why your clients need what you’re offering. By understanding their why, you can better service them. If you are working with business clients, understanding the business’ needs is also important to go from service provider to long-term partner.

2. Share in the same values

Just like with our personal relationships, in the world of business, we need to find common ground with our clients and partners. We need to identify with each others’ values and demonstrate that we share the same goals. When these things align, it’s that much easier to form a lasting relationship with those who use us. Draw parallels with your personal relationships where things like, location, family, and lifestyle choices all matter. The same approach is taken by your customers when they look for a business to build a relationship with.

3. Keep things exciting

A relationship without sizzle will inevitably fizzle out. You need to keep things exciting and fun for your customers. You need to come up with things that are new and different from time to time in order to showcase the things your brand is capable of. A fun promotion or customer-centric party could be just that. Always look for the wow factor in everyday operations, too. Your business should be memorable and engaging.

4. Loyalty works both ways

The best business partner is willing to work that bit harder with a client, even if it means going the extra mile. Letting your clients know that you have their back is an absolute must when it comes to establishing loyalty. It’s a two-way road and you need to make that clear. For instance, showing up for an emergency service call on your day off or after hours, without charging an excessive fee is a great way to demonstrate that you value their business beyond their money. Along these same lines, you can never guarantee perfect performance 24/7, but always doing what it takes to try and make things perfect is what you should strive for.

5. Be a little mysterious

Intrigue and mystery are always around to help keep things alive. Sometimes, delighting and surprising your customers is a great way to change things up and keep it fresh. Give them a gift for no reason. Send them a random note to let them know you appreciate them. These are things any partner, in any aspect of your life, would absolutely adore. Plus, they’re sure to tell their friends when they receive a surprise gift too! That is the best PR possible…

6. Keep their best interest at heart

As a business owner, you obviously have things to worry about. You worry about your bottom line, you worry about your product launches, and you worry about marketing things to new customers. But, at the end of the day, your current clients are the backbone of your business. One of the best ways to keep them around is to show them that despite everything else, you will always put them first.

This Valentine’s Day, show your best customers that you are willing to make sacrifice for their benefit. Everyone approaches the negotiation table focused on what’s in it for them. Next time around, take the supportive approach as you go into your client meetings and you will be amazed at their response to your new attitude.
